Membership Benefits

From Helen Wanford, our Membership Secretary

We would like to think of ourselves not just as a horticultural society but also as a gardening community. The objectives of Biggin Hill and District Horticultural Society are to encourage interest in gardening, to promote discussions between members and to hold horticultural shows and competitions.

Current membership benefits include a wide range of services, providing eight talks on a variety of subjects per year; three shows spring, summer and autumn; a spring plant sale and a very sociable Christmas oriented Annual General Meeting (AGM).

A variety of refreshments is provided at events: homemade cakes donated by members (who are often winners in the domestic section of our flower shows!) And we also aim to have a gluten free / lactose free / vegan option so that no members need go without a tasty treat!

Other Membership Benefits

We have started to provide ancillary services, for both our members and the wider Biggin Hill community. For example, we held a Craft and Artisan Fair in October 2024.

And on 21st February 2026 we are having our first Seed Swap. Ornamental, vegetable and herb seeds (in packets) can be exchanged. There will also be advice and demonstrations of propagation techniques. An insert in the Schedule gave some details, and there is information on the Seed Swap page on the website here.

A Multi-Generational Gardening Society

We have been developing the children’s section in shows to encourage them to garden and look after the environment. We realise that many, but not all parents, are busy with work, ferrying children to various events etc. so we also appeal to gardening grandparents to take up the challenge to encourage, help and foster gardening awareness and shared interests with their grandchildren.

Our aim is to create a society where you can discuss your gardening aspirations, problems or pests. Our committee is always willing to highlight and engage in these conversations or to point you in the direction of one of our professional or expert gardeners who can answer your question.

Also do feel free to bring along your friends and family so that they can enjoy, and possibly join, our community. The more the merrier!

Is there a Gardening Topic you’d like to know more about?

Whilst we are promoting the society via this website, social media and links with other organisations, we are also looking for ways to expand membership benefits, including new ideas.

We are keen to hear about the topics for talks or speakers you would like, items you need to see on the trade table, plants you would like us to provide at the Plant Sale or even the cakes you would like to eat at the shows!

And if anyone has a desire to join or volunteer to help our vibrant and active committee please let us know. Above all, we would like to encourage the gardening community spirit and get you talking to the committee and each other about your gardens, allotments and houseplants.
